    575 Castro Street

United States | Directed by Jenni Olson

575 CASTRO STREET begins with the following introduction: “In February 1977, the SAN FRANCISCO GAY FILM FESTIVAL was born when a self described 'ragtag bunch of hippie fag filmmakers' got together and projected their Super 8 short films on a bed sheet. Many of these films explored gay themes, but (…) many were simple studies in light and motion.
Most of these films passed through Harvey Milk´s Castro Camera Store at 575 Castro St. for proce...

    Liebe, Eifersucht und Rache

Germany | Directed by Michael Brynntrup

Explores the mobile meanings of language in film with the help of sophisticated telecommunications; an aural/oral offering. A quirky short film presented under the (extremely) tongue-in-cheek guise of an educational video for non-native German speakers. The narrative takes place in a gay leather bar, as a man shares a telephone conversation with an escort dressed in drag, looking for sex. A peculiar delight from the famously subversive Michael Br...

As he meanders, he is tortured by images: every male body he sees rekindles memories of his lover, who is with him once again in his imagination. The Watermelon Woman

United States | Directed by Cheryl Dunye

Racist tendencies might appear to have been expunged from emancipation and gender discourse – but this is far from being the case. The racism inherent in mainstream culture is not necessarily recognised as such by alternative thinkers. Dunye takes a stance with a reflection on a representative figure of this complex issue.

    To Write from Memory

United States | Directed by Emory Chao Johnson

Meticulously, they inspect their own body as the camera looks on, documenting every step of their transition. Yet what starts off as a young filmmaker’s audiovisual diary soon expands into a confrontation with their own past. It is not easy to break out of a cocoon spun from motherly demands and grievances – especially when your body gets treated as a family matter, and when your need for autonomy is met with incomprehension.
